It's your fifth winter in Poland. The karta pobytu (Polish residence permit) in your wallet is the third one you've held, and a colleague on the site says, "Just apply for permanent residence, it's easy." Is it? Nobody explains when the clock started, which permit counts, or what happens if you get a date wrong. If you're a Zimbabwe citizen working in Poland, the honest answer sits in the middle: permanent residence in Poland is very doable, but it rewards people who prepare. This guide walks through the 5-year route, the B1 Polish requirement, the PLN 640 fee and the small traps that quietly reset the clock.
So, does Zimbabwe change anything about permanent residence in Poland?
Short answer: no. Polish law has no separate track for Zimbabwean citizens. You apply under the same rules as an Indian engineer or a Filipino nurse, to the same voivodeship office (urząd wojewódzki), through the same online system. What does differ is paperwork. Your birth certificate, marriage certificate or any other document issued in Zimbabwe will usually need a sworn translation into Polish, and sometimes extra legalisation. Ask before you order anything. A wasted courier from Harare costs more than a message.
Everything below follows the rules the immigration authority publishes at gov.pl/web/cudzoziemcy. Rules change, so check that page for the latest version before you file.

When does the 5-year clock actually start?
For the standard permanent residence permit (zezwolenie na pobyt stały) and for the EU long-term resident permit, the offices ask for five years of uninterrupted, legal residence in Poland immediately before you file. The key word is legal. Time on a valid visa, on a temporary residence permit, or while a renewal filed on time is pending normally counts. Time in the country without a valid basis does not.
So take an hour this weekend and build a timeline. Write down:
- the date you first entered Poland legally
- the start and end date of every visa and every karta pobytu
- the date you filed each renewal
- every long trip outside Poland, with exit and return dates
If two permits have a gap between them, even a short one, that is the first thing to check. Not sure which permit you're holding? Our guide to [permanent residence: 5 years, B1, PLN 640] shows how to read your card and count the years.

Stały or EU long-term resident — which permit should you file for?
Both permits cost PLN 640 for the decision, plus PLN 100 for the card. Both need five years of residence, confirmed knowledge of Polish and health insurance cover or proof that treatment costs are covered. The difference is what you get. Pobyt stały is tied to life in Poland. The EU long-term resident card is valid for 5 years and carries extra mobility rights inside the EU, which the voivodeship office describes on its own page.
The office explains the long-term resident permit here: Rezydent długoterminowy UE, Zachodniopomorski Urząd Wojewódzki. Most of our Zimbabwean clients want a secure base in Poland first, so the choice depends on your plans. We can look at your file and tell you which one fits.
Married to a Polish citizen? Your route can be shorter. See Permanent Residence for Spouse of a Polish Citizen 2026: 3 Years Married, 2 on a Card. If your family joined you, remember that your spouse and children have their own clocks and their own permits. What exactly do you have to prove? B1 Polish, income, insurance
The office checks four things, and none of them is a surprise if you start early.
- Polish at B1 level, confirmed by an official certificate. Using Polish at work is not proof. The exemption for children under 16 does not help you.
- A stable, regular source of income in Poland: your contract, payslips and tax filings should tell one consistent story.
- Health insurance, or confirmation that treatment costs are covered. Details are on the NFZ site, nfz.gov.pl.
- Proof of where you live, plus your passport and current karta pobytu.
B1 is the item people underestimate. Exam dates for Polish as a foreign language are limited and fill up, so book your slot before you start collecting everything else. On income, look at your contract against the 2026 minimum wage of PLN 4,806 gross. A contract far below it invites questions. Our post on the minimum wage and your karta pobytu shows how that number is used.

What can quietly break the clock? Job loss, long trips home, late filings
Most people don't lose time through one big mistake. They lose it through small ones.
- Losing a job and not telling the office. A change in your work situation has to be reported within 15 working days.
- Changing employer without notifying the urząd, or without a new document attached when you have a renewal pending.
- Letting your card expire before the renewal is filed. File on time, not "next week".
- Long stays outside Poland. Absences can raise questions about continuity, and we won't guess a number here. Ask before booking a long trip home.
- Missing a letter. A Polish decision letter that sits uncollected counts as delivered after 14 days.

Practical tip: build your timeline from documents, not memory. Farai, a welder from Bulawayo (an illustrative example, not a real client), lined up his permits and found a nine-day gap between two of them. He asked about it before filing, not after the office wrote to him.
How do you file in 2026? Step by step
Since 27 April 2026, applications for temporary, permanent and EU long-term residence permits are filed online only, in the MOS system. Paper applications are no longer accepted. Here is the order we recommend.
- Check your dates and your permit type against the timeline you built.
- Book and pass the B1 Polish exam, then keep the certificate safe.
- Collect your documents. Have anything issued in Zimbabwe translated by a sworn translator.
- Create your account and file in MOS. Our post on the new online process shows what to set up first.
- Pay PLN 640 for the permit and prepare PLN 100 for the card, and keep the proof of payment.
- Attend the fingerprints appointment in person at the voivodeship office.
- Wait. The offices' service cards give six months as the target for a decision, but real cases can run longer.
Details on the online system: TRC Process in Poland 2026: Online Only Since 27 April, PLN 440 + 100, One Deadline That Matters. If the office writes to you, you usually have 7 days to answer: Wezwanie Letter from the Urząd: 7 Days to Answer. If the wait stretches, a ponaglenie is the formal reminder.
Permanent residence is also the door to Polish citizenship. Today the recognition procedure asks for a period of continuous stay on a permanent residence permit and stable income. A draft law proposes to lengthen that period, so read the current rules before you plan.
The voivodeship office explains the current procedure for being recognised as a Polish citizen here: Uznanie za obywatela polskiego.
