Can Your Parents Stay in Poland? Karta Pobytu for Elderly Parents, PLN 340 (2026)

Karta Pobytu for Elderly Parents 2026: 3 Routes, PLN 340

Karta pobytu for elderly parents in Poland: parents aren't in family reunification. See the 3 real routes, the PLN 340 fee and housing proof. Ask our team.

It's 11 pm. Your mother is 68, alone at home in Kochi, and she has just said the sentence you've been dreading: 'Who will look after me while you're in Poland?' You open Google and type karta pobytu for elderly parents. Page after page about spouses and children. Nothing about her. So let's fix that. Here is what Polish law actually offers the parents of foreign workers, what it costs in PLN, and why the flat you rent matters almost as much as the permit.

So, is there a karta pobytu for elderly parents at all?

Here's the part that stings: there is no standard Karta Pobytu (Polish residence permit) for the parents of a foreign worker. Family reunification in Poland is built around the spouse and minor children. As a rule, parents of an adult child are not on that list. Our guide on who skips the 2-year wait and who doesn't shows who does qualify. The official overview sits on gov.pl/web/cudzoziemcy.

That doesn't mean the door is shut. It means you use a different door and prepare it properly. Poland's permits follow the core family. Parents come in through visas, or through a discretionary permit where you show a real reason for them to stay.

Visit visa, long-stay visa or a permit: which door fits your parents?

Choose by how long they really plan to stay. Three options exist, and picking the wrong one costs months.

Visa fees and appointment rules differ by country, so check the Polish consulate in your parents' city before you buy flights. For permits inside Poland, the decision-maker is the voivode (wojewoda), and the file goes through the MOS portal.

How does the 'other circumstances' permit work for a parent, and what does it cost?

This is the route people mean when they ask about a karta pobytu for parents. It is real, but it is discretionary. The office decides whether your reasons are strong enough, and nothing is automatic.

Article 187 of the Act on Foreigners allows a temporary permit when a foreigner shows circumstances that justify staying beyond three months and that the law doesn't cover elsewhere. A parent who needs daily care from the only child able to give it is the kind of case families bring. There is no guarantee, so prepare as if the office will test every page.

  1. Fix the legal basis first. Your parent must be in Poland legally when they file, for example on a valid visa. The application goes in no later than the last day of their legal stay.
  2. Build the reason. Medical letters, proof that nobody else can care for them at home, and family documents that show the relationship, such as your birth certificate naming them. Foreign documents usually need a sworn translation.
  3. Prove support. A written commitment from you to support them, plus your own income documents and your housing proof.
  4. File through MOS with the application form, two photos and a copy of the passport. The stamp duty is PLN 340. Check the current amount on gov.pl before you pay.
  5. Wait with the file in hand. Keep copies, answer office requests quickly, and note the end date. The permit is granted for the period needed, up to 3 years.

The basics of this permit type are in our temporary residence guide, and renewals work by the last-day rule explained in the residence card renewal guide. File through MOS.

Does anything change if you're married to a Polish citizen?

Sometimes. If your spouse is Polish, you may hold your own card through marriage, which we cover in the marriage-based Karta Pobytu guide (PLN 340, MOS only). That secures your status, but it does not hand your parents a permit.

There is a narrow rule for parents of a Polish citizen who depend on that citizen's support, tied to EU freedom-of-movement situations (Article 158a). It is technical. Get advice before you build a plan around it.

Where will your parents live? The housing proof most families forget

Offices read the flat as closely as the passport. A file with a shaky housing story is a weak file.

Our Housing team handles this part every day: finding flats where landlords accept a family move-in, checking the contract before you sign, and helping you present the housing side of the file. Start at legalsol.pl/housing or message the team on WhatsApp +48 576 228 316.

Illustrative example (a composite, not a real client): Lakshmi, a nurse from Kerala working in Łódź, wanted her 72-year-old father with her after her mother died. She started with a visa, gathered his medical letters, and moved to a flat with a lift before filing. Her housing story and her care story finally matched.

Health insurance for parents: what if your mother gets sick in Poland?

Never assume your own contributions cover your parents. Rules for family members under the public system are narrow and depend on status, so read nfz.gov.pl and ask before they travel. Until cover is confirmed in writing, buy private insurance for the entire stay. A hospital stay without cover can cost far more than the premium.

Practical tip: build the housing proof and the medical letters before you buy flight tickets. Offices read the file, not the story, and a cancelled booking costs less than a refused application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my parents just apply for a karta pobytu as my dependants?

Not under family reunification, which covers spouses and minor children. The routes left are a visa-based stay or the temporary permit for 'other circumstances' (PLN 340, decided case by case). Treat the second as a request the office may refuse, and prepare the file accordingly.

How long can my mother stay on a visa before she has to leave?

A Schengen C visa allows up to 90 days within any 180-day period. A national D visa can cover a longer stay, up to one year. Either way, plan the end date from day one and decide early whether a permit application makes sense.

What if the visa ends before the permit decision comes?

File through MOS no later than the last day of legal stay. Filing on time is what protects the stay while the office decides, so keep the confirmation. Late filing is where most families get hurt.

Do I need a bigger flat to bring my parents?

I can't quote a minimum size. What counts is a stable address where your parent genuinely lives: landlord consent, a lease that is long enough, and a space that fits their health. Our Housing team can check your contract before you sign.
