It's late October, and your cousin in Lahore has already asked: “Will you be home for Eid?” You filed your karta pobytu (Polish residence permit) application a few months ago. The case is still open. You'd love to be at that table. So you open a flight app, and then you freeze. If you fly out, can you get back in? Eid travel from Poland with a pending residence application is the question we hear before every holiday. The honest answer depends on one thing you can check today. This year's Eids have passed, so let's plan for the next ones: Eid al-Fitr is expected around 9–10 March 2027, and Eid al-Adha around 16–17 May 2027.
So, can you leave Poland for Eid while your case is still open?
Short version: your case can keep running while you're abroad. What it doesn't do is open the border for you on the way back. Those are two different questions, and mixing them up is how people end up stuck.
Since 27 April 2026, applications for temporary residence, permanent residence and EU long-term resident status go through the MOS portal only. Paper applications that didn't reach the office before that date were left unprocessed. If you filed correctly and in time, your stay in Poland stays legal until the decision is final. That's the part people remember. The part they forget: official guidance from the voivodeship offices and the MOS portal makes the same point again and again. A filing confirmation is not permission to cross the border, and it doesn't replace a visa.

In plain words: a pending application protects your stay inside Poland. It doesn't promise you a seat on the plane back.
What paper do you actually show at the Polish border?
Forget the name of your permit for a second. Ask yourself: what document will be in my hand at passport control? Your answer puts you in one of three groups.
- Valid card, renewal filed. Your karta pobytu is still in date and you've applied to extend it. The card plus your passport is the normal travel pair. This is the cleanest situation, and it's the one to aim for.
- Card expired, case pending. You filed on time, the old card ran out, and what you hold is a filing confirmation: an electronic MOS certificate, or a stamp in some older cases. This is the grey zone. Don't assume it works like a card.
- First application, no card yet. Nothing in your hand proves a right to re-enter. For Pakistani citizens, that means the normal visa rules apply in full.
If you're in the second group, read our piece on the passport stamp and flying home for Diwali and the guide on whether your stay is legal while you wait before you spend a rupee on tickets. The change on 27 April matters here, because many applicants now see an electronic certificate instead of the old red stamp. Same Eid, different paper.
Pakistani passport, Schengen visa: how do you get back in?
Pakistan is on the list of countries whose citizens need a visa for the Schengen area. A valid residence card does the job of that visa. A pending application doesn't.
So if you leave Poland without a valid card or visa, coming back can mean applying for a visa at a Polish diplomatic mission, as a separate procedure. It isn't decided at the airport. It isn't guaranteed. And the timing isn't in your hands. That's exactly how a ten-day Eid trip turns into a lost shift, a lost job or a missed deadline.
Two more traps. First, your route. Many flights home go through Gulf hubs or Istanbul, which are outside Schengen. A connection through Frankfurt or Vienna adds Schengen transit questions, so ask before you book. Second, your employer. Eid isn't a public holiday in Poland, so you need approved leave, and your contract and employer letter belong in your hand luggage.
For border-crossing rules, the Border Guard is the authority. For your case file, it's your voivodeship office, and the official starting point is gov.pl/cudzoziemcy. One voivodeship office FAQ states it plainly: the residence card together with the passport authorises crossing the border, which is why the card-plus-passport pair is the clean option.
How do you plan Eid 2027 without gambling on your case?
Good news: you have months. Eid al-Fitr is expected around 9–10 March 2027 and Eid al-Adha around 16–17 May 2027, depending on moon sightings, as Gulf astronomy centres report. Pakistan's own sighting can shift a day. That's enough time to do this properly. Here is the order we'd follow.
- Check your card's end date and your filing date. Write both down. If the card is still valid on the day you return, you're in the clean group.
- Open your case in MOS and read the latest status and any messages. Download and print the certificate.
- Ask in writing, ideally your voivodeship office or us, what document you'll show at the Polish border on your exact dates. Keep the answer.
- Book refundable tickets, or buy only after steps 1–3. Skip Schengen transit unless you've confirmed it.
- Request leave early. Eid isn't a public holiday in Poland, so your employer needs time. Carry your contract and an employer letter.
- Decide who checks your MOS notices and your post every week while you're away.
If the MOS screens confuse you, our guide on checking your case status in MOS after the April reset walks through it.
Practical tip: don't pay for a non-refundable ticket until you can answer one question in writing: what exact document will I show at the Polish border? If you can't name it, don't fly yet.
What if a letter, or the decision, arrives while you're away?
Your case doesn't pause because you're at your parents' house. If the voivodeship asks you to supplement documents, the deadline in the letter keeps running, and missing it can sink an otherwise strong application. If the decision is a refusal, an appeal clock starts. Our post on what Kenyan applicants should do after a refusal shows how short that window is.
The fix is simple: someone you trust, or a representative with a written power of attorney, should be able to read your MOS notices and post every week while you're gone. We can help clients set that up.
Here is an illustrative example, a composite and not a real client. Imran, a welder from Faisalabad, had filed for renewal in time and had Eid al-Adha tickets in the cart. The old card had expired three weeks earlier. Before paying, Imran asked one question: what will I show at the border? Nobody could give a clean answer, so the trip moved to after the decision. Boring? Yes. But the job and the case were both still there in June.
Long absences can also affect your permanent-residence clock. Trips outside Poland and your 5-year count explains where the limits are.
