Healthcare in Poland works on two tracks: the public NFZ system (free for those with ZUS contributions) and private clinics (paid, but faster). As a foreigner, you can access both β and knowing which to use when can save you time, money, and stress.
How NFZ Works
NFZ (Narodowy Fundusz Zdrowia) is Poland's national health fund. If you work on an employment contract or pay ZUS contributions as JDG owner, you and your family are automatically covered by NFZ.
- Coverage starts the day your ZUS contributions begin
- Covers: GP visits, specialist referrals, hospital treatment, emergency care
- You get an EKUZ card for travel within the EU
How to Register With a Family Doctor (POZ)
- Find a POZ clinic near you (use the NFZ clinic finder at nfz.gov.pl)
- Go in person with your PESEL and insurance card (or ZUS confirmation)
- Sign the declaration of choosing your doctor (deklaracja wyboru lekarza)
- You are now registered β and can book appointments with your GP
Common NFZ Challenges for Foreigners
- Long waiting times for specialists (2-6 months for non-urgent cases)
- Language barrier β many doctors do not speak English
- Documentation β proof of NFZ coverage sometimes confuses reception staff
Private Healthcare β When to Use It
Private clinics in Warsaw cost 100-300 PLN per visit but offer same-day appointments, English-speaking doctors, and no waiting lists. Popular networks:
- Medicover β widely available, English support
- LuxMed β premium network, corporate packages
- Enel-Med β good coverage in Warsaw
- Damian Medical Center β popular with expats
Emergencies
In an emergency, call 112 (universal) or 999 (ambulance). Emergency care in public hospitals is free for everyone regardless of insurance status. Bring your passport. After treatment, you may receive a bill if you are not insured β but care is never refused.
Private Health Insurance
If you don't have NFZ coverage yet (between jobs, student, etc.), private health insurance starts from 100-200 PLN/month and is accepted at most private clinics.
Moving to Poland means a new healthcare system, a new language, and new bureaucracy. Legal Solution helps you get registered, insured, and fully settled so you can focus on building your new life here.
