Poland does recognize degrees from India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and other non-EU countries β but the process depends on WHY you need recognition. There are different procedures for employment, Blue Card, regulated professions, and academic continuation.
When Do You Need Degree Recognition?
- Applying for EU Blue Card (requires recognized degree)
- Working in a regulated profession (doctor, lawyer, engineer, teacher)
- Continuing academic studies in Poland
- Some employers specifically require it
- Applying for permanent residency or citizenship
Step 1: Apostille
All foreign academic documents must have an Apostille stamp from the relevant authority in your home country:
- India: Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), New Delhi
- Bangladesh: Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dhaka
- Sri Lanka: Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Colombo
Apostille confirms the document is genuine and officially issued. Without it, Polish authorities will not process your documents.
Step 2: Sworn Translation into Polish
After apostille, your degree certificate must be translated into Polish by a certified sworn translator (tlumacz przysiegly). Cost: 80-150 PLN per document. Do not use Google Translate or unofficial translators.
Step 3: Nostrification (If Required)
Nostrification is the formal academic recognition of your foreign degree by a Polish university. Required for:
- Working as a doctor, pharmacist, lawyer, or other regulated professional
- Enrolling in Polish doctoral programs
- Some government positions
For Blue Card and most private employment, nostrification is NOT required β apostilled + translated degree is sufficient.
How Long Does It Take?
- Apostille: 1-4 weeks (varies by country)
- Sworn translation: 3-7 days
- Nostrification (if needed): 3-6 months
Start your apostille process BEFORE you need it. Do not wait until you are already in Poland to begin β it can delay your entire permit application.
