Understanding taxes in Poland as a foreigner can feel overwhelming. But the system is actually quite logical once you know the basics. Here's everything you need to know about PIT, ZUS, and how to keep more of your income legally.
Are You a Tax Resident in Poland?
You become a Polish tax resident if you spend more than 183 days per year in Poland OR if your 'centre of vital interests' (family, business) is in Poland. As a tax resident, you pay Polish taxes on your worldwide income.
PIT β Income Tax
Poland uses a progressive tax system:
- Up to 120,000 PLN annual income: 12% PIT
- Above 120,000 PLN: 32% PIT on the excess
- Tax-free allowance: 30,000 PLN per year
If you earn 8,000 PLN/month gross on a contract, your actual monthly PIT is around 400-600 PLN after deductions.
ZUS β Social and Health Contributions
ZUS contributions are mandatory and cover pension, disability, sick leave, and health insurance:
- Employee pays: ~13.7% of gross salary (pension + health contribution)
- Employer pays: ~20% on top of gross salary
- For JDG owners: flat contributions regardless of income (approximately 1,600 PLN/month in 2026 for full ZUS)
Contract of Employment vs B2B
Many specialists in Poland work B2B (as JDG, invoicing clients). Here's the key difference:
- Employment contract: employer handles taxes/ZUS, stable but higher total cost
- B2B (JDG): you manage your own taxes, more complex but often 30-50% more take-home pay
- B2B tax options: standard 12%/32% scale, 19% flat tax (liniowy), or lump sum (ryczalt)
Filing Your Annual PIT Return
The PIT return deadline is April 30 each year. Employees automatically get a pre-filled e-PIT on gov.pl β just log in with Profil Zaufany, verify, and submit. JDG owners must file themselves or use an accountant.
Can Foreigners Use Tax Reliefs?
Yes. Popular reliefs available to foreigners include: internet costs deduction, home office deduction, IP Box regime (5% tax for creators of intellectual property), and child allowance for families.
