PESEL is Poland's national identification number — a unique 11-digit code assigned to every resident. Without it, you can't open a bank account, sign a lease, register a car, or access public services.
Here's everything you need to know about getting PESEL as a foreigner in 2026.
What Is PESEL?
PESEL stands for Powszechny Elektroniczny System Ewidencji Ludności — the universal electronic population register. Your number encodes your date of birth, gender, and a unique identifier.
It's used across all Polish government systems and most private services.
Who Can Get PESEL?
You can apply for PESEL if you:
- Are registered at a Polish address (meldunek)
- Have a valid residence permit (Karta Pobytu)
- Are a Ukrainian citizen under temporary protection
- Are an EU citizen living in Poland
- Need PESEL for tax or business purposes
Why You Need PESEL
PESEL is required for:
- 🏦 Opening a bank account
- 🏠 Signing a lease or buying property
- 💊 Accessing the healthcare system (NFZ)
- 📱 Getting a Polish SIM card with a contract
- 💼 Setting up a business (JDG or Sp. z o.o.)
- 🔐 Creating Profil Zaufany — needed for MOS 2.0

Documents You Need
Special Case: Ukrainians
If you're a Ukrainian citizen who arrived after February 24, 2022, you can get PESEL through a simplified procedure. You also receive UKR status granting access to healthcare, benefits, and the right to work.
Common Questions
Can I get PESEL without a registered address?
In some cases yes — if you need it for tax or business purposes, you can apply directly at the municipality office.
How long does it take?
Usually 1–7 business days.
Is PESEL the same as NIP?
No. NIP is a tax number for businesses. PESEL is your personal ID number — but as an individual, your PESEL also serves as your personal tax ID for most purposes.
